All suggest something confusing or testing, yet they convey various undertones. A riddle welcomes hypothesis. A problem, similar to a puzzle, is regularly stated as an inquiry. The appropriate response ordinarily includes a figure of speech or a wind in intuition. For instance: What is more prominent than God, more malicious than the fiend, the poor have it, the rich need it, what's more, in the event that you eat it, youll bite the dust? (Answer: Nothing) A Catch 22 appears to be crazy, however actually communicates a specific truth. For instance, â€Å"Youth is squandered on the young.† A predicament is a condition of extraordinary perplexity. An individual or a gathering is supposed to be â€Å"in a quandary,† as in this feature from The Gaffney Ledger: â€Å"Council still in a bind over human services insurance.† Of the three words in the title of this post, puzzle is generally visit in a Google search (296,000,000), conundrum next (140,200,000), and riddle last (64,400,000). Writing a role model essay intends three main steps: understanding the concept of a role model in general and its psychological importance, identifying one’s ideal hero, and attempting to transmit this perfect person as he or she occurs in one’s consciousness. To start with, the most common role models are either famous public people, such as singers, actors, and sports stars, or the closest people, mainly parents, relatives, and friends. Regardless who the role model is, he or she usually serves as a motivator and reminder of possible success the person may gain. The importance of having a role model has already been proved by psychologists, taking into consideration that this stimulus tends to give the inspiration and hope for a person to develop himself or herself. Moreover, scholars also claim that having a role model can keep one’s spirits up in the tough hours as an encouragement to move further. Before writing an essay, one has to identify his or her ideal person and illustrate the influence of this role model. It is reasonable to comprehend what traits make this person so special and try to enumerate them later. One has to distinguish those features that he or she admires the most: integrity, compassion, sense of humor, authenticity, confidence, or honesty. There is no need to depict the appearance or hobbies unless these are the most admirable characteristics. However, the description of how the mentioned virtues have inspired a person for some actions can evidently be valuable to mention in the essay. It is also advisable to include more specific examples connected with the role model that led to some modifications in one’s life. Those may include role model’s exclusive talents, skills, a way of behavior, or even simple sayings and actions. The essay will be more advanced if the focus of the writer continuously passes from the description of the role model t o his or her role in one’s life. Additionally, one has to be aware of significance to depict the role model in the way an individual perceive him or her personally. This statement implies that one may describe those features he or she considers to be the most worthwhile, even if others do not agree or do not notice them at all. Writing an essay, it is essential to be honest, as it can make the description look more vivid and natural. Especially, this advice is applicable if the writer doubts whether the reader has ever heard about the discussed role model. To summarize, role model essay aims at the depiction of one’s ideal person and its influence in individual’s life. This type of essay predicts the acknowledgment of advantages for those who have a role model, the ways of choosing a role model, and the methods of his or her believable portrayal.

Drug Legalization In America Essay Example For Students

Drug Legalization In America Essay The issues surrounding drug legalization are complicated and sensitive. Each year drug use kills about 14,000 Americans and costs taxpayers approximately $70 billion. Drug-related illnesses and crime costs an estimated $67 billion per year. Drug use also influences worker productivity as seventy-one percent of all illicit drug users are eighteen and older and employed. Also impacted is public safety. A 1993, study from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicated that eighteen percent of 2,000 deaths from seven states had drugs, other than alcohol, in their systems when they died. Ironically, some citizens still support the idea of drug legalization of certain drugs, including marijuana and Schedule I drugs (â€Å"A Police Chief’s Guide to the Legalization Issue†, May 8, 2001. Justice Department, Drug Enforcement Administration). The use of drugs is universal. By the nineteenth century in America, drugs were widely available. Narcotics such as heroin and cocaine were recommended as remedies for everything from hay fever and sinusitis to depression. In fact, cocaine was an active ingredient in Coca-Cola for a brief time. This common availability led to many Americans becoming addicts. The increasing number of addicts led to the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906, which required that certain drugs be listed as ingredients on products. In 1914, the federal government went even further when it approved the Harrison Act. This act required anyone distributing or possessing certain drugs to register with the federal government and pay taxes on the products. Subsequently, this led to several states outlawing narcotics altogether. In 1919, the Supreme Court used the Harrison Act as a catalyst to make the prescribing of narcotics by doctors to known addicts to support their habits illegal. Marijuana was a legal drug in the United States until 1937, when Congress passed the Marijuana Act. This act made it illegal to sell marijuana without paying an occupational tax and a special tax on each sale. However, because few â€Å"tax stamps† (â€Å"Drug Legalization†, January 5, 2001) were ever issued, the act effectively made marijuana illegal. The federal government has been strengthening its laws against drug sales and possession for the past eighty years. A total of thirty-two states have mandatory-minimum laws similar to federal guidelines. For example, in New York, possession of a few ounces of cocaine or twelve ounces of marijuana can bring up to fifteen years in prison while a second or third offense can lead to life imprisonment. That is a longer sentence than some rapists and murderers receive. The call for legalization has been ongoing for many years. Theoretically, legalization would have a domino effect. First, prohibition of drugs limits the supply, creating extreme inflation and making the importing and selling drugs big business. Thus, legalization would take away the profit margin, lowering drug prices and destroying the black market. Second, by lowering drug prices, users would be less likely to turn to crime to support their habits. After all, there are few jobs that can maintain an expensive habit that can cost up to $1000 per day. Additionally, law enforcement estimates that seventy-five percent of criminal offenses are drug-related. Third, allowing the federal government to control the production and delivery of drugs would make them safer in that the government could ensure the purity and quality of the drugs. Legalization would also help to reduce the number of drug-related imprisonments and help uncrown jails. For instance, in New York City, it is estimated that there are 150 arrests per day for possession and since1981 the state has spent $4 billion to increase prison capacity. An alternative is drug treatment. Sending drug offenders to treatment programs instead of prison would save money. States spend an average of $30,000 per prisoner per year compared to $20,000 per year for the average treatment program. Offenders who go through a treatment program are better able to move on with their lived than those convicted of a felony and who then must try to do well on the outside with a criminal record. Also, many prisoners never kick their habit, even while incarcerated, because drugs frequently infiltrate the corrections system. .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353 , .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353 .postImageUrl , .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353 , .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353:hover , .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353:visited , .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353:active { border:0!important; } .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353:active , .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353 .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud156f53e8dd8ea08c8ec6bbb07e7c353:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Poetic Inspiration EssayAs long as the average citizen supports politicians who are tough on crime, an open debate on legalization is nearly impossible. Most politicians resist even discussing legalization in view of the fact that to do so is often considered political suicide. Nevertheless, a non-judgmental attitude is what is needed or legalization will always be a taboo subject for the powers that be. Even though the debate over legalization has come to a virtual standstill, the nation’s failure to stop or significantly slow drug use and abuse seems to be getting to the point where even the most staunch politicians need to recognize the need to examine current United States drug policy. Drug legalization is a public concern that should be discussed openly and objectively. Politics Essays

Essay Examples on Civil Rights Movement Essay Example

Essay Examples on Civil Rights Movement Paper 1st Essay Sample on Civil Rights Movement The 1960s were one of the most significant decades in the twentieth century. The sixties were filled with new music, clothes, and an overall change in the way people acted, but most importantly it was a decade filled with civil rights movements. On February 1, 1960, four black freshmen from North Carolina Agriculture and Technical College in Greensboro went to a Woolworths lunch counter and sat down politely and asked for service. The waitress refused to serve them and the students remained sitting there until the store closed for the night. The very next day they returned, this time with some more black students and even a few white ones. They were all well dressed, doing their homework, while crowds began to form outside the store. A columnist for the segregation minded Richmond News Leader wrote, Here were the colored students in coats, white shirts, and ties and one of them was reading Goethe and one was taking notes from a biology text. And here, on the sidewalk outside was a g ang of white boys come to heckle, a ragtail rabble, slack-jawed, black-jacketed, grinning fit to kill, and some of them, God save the mark, were waving the proud and honored flag of the Southern States in the last war fought by gentlemen. Eheu! It gives one pause(Chalmers 21). As one can see, African-Americans didnt have it easy trying to gain their civil rights. Several Acts were passed in the 60s, such as Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965. This was also, unfortunately, the time that the assassinations of important leaders took place. The deaths of John F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr., all happened in the 60s. Slavery in the United States existed from the early senventeenth century until 1865. It was put to an end by the combination of the Emancipation Proclamation, 1863, and then the thirteenth amendment to the Constitution. 2nd Essay Sample on Civil Rights Movement The Civil Rights Movement in AmericaAnd when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and hamlet, from every state and city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of Gods children-black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Catholics and Protestants-will be able to join hands and to sngn in the words of the old Negro spiritual, Free at last, free at last; thank God almighty, we are free at last.Martin Luther King, Jr. The civil rights movement in the United States was a political, legal, and social struggle that was organized primarily by black Americans with some help from white America. The civil rights struggle was aimed at gaining full citizenship and racial equality for all Americans, particularly the most discriminated group, African Americans, and wasfirst and foremost a challenge to segregation.Segregation was deeply embedded in the South and was used to control blacks since the reconstruction of the South following the American Civil War.Durin g the civil rights movement, individuals and organizations challenged segregation and discrimination by using a number of methods that included protests, marches, boycotts, and refusing segregation laws. Most historians agree that the civil rights movement began with either the Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 or the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955 and ended with the Voting Rights Act of 1965; however, there is a lot of debate on when it began and ended. There were civil rights issues well into the 1980s. The main tool of discrimination against blacks in the United States was segregation, often called the Jim Crow system.Segregation became common in the South after the Reconstruction when the Democratic Party had gained control of the South and started to reverse black advances made during reconstruction. 3rdEssay Sample on Civil Rights Movement We will write a custom essay sample on Essay Examples on Civil Rights Movement specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on Essay Examples on Civil Rights Movement specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on Essay Examples on Civil Rights Movement specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer In order to understand what led to the Civil Rights Movement, we need tofirst understand what the blacks had been enduring. One could state that the civil rights movement actually started back in 1863 with the Emancipation of Proclamation abolishing slavery.During the First Reconstruction, 1865-1877, blacks tried to live a free life. The white plantation owner’s of the South could not run their plantations without the slaves helping. So, they set up a system called share-cropping.Under this plan, blacks would borrow from the local merchants against their future crops. They would go into debt so much they were unable to pay. Thus, they were stuck on the plantations, working off their debt. This crop-lien system lasted until the 1960’s.Also, in the South, blacks were still not allowed to vote. The people in South denied their right to vote by using â€Å"grandfather clauses† and literacy tests.Segregation still existed. There was also a lot of violence in the South agains t blacks. From 1910-1919, 57 lynchings a year took place. All of this background is important in understanding what the blacks went through during this time period. One of the most indispensable factors of beginning the Civil Rights Movement, involved the cotton industry. The demand for cotton had decreased with the increase of synthetic fibers and imported fabrics. Also, with the increase in mechanization, the demand for plantation workers decreased. After all of these influences, 70% of sharecroppers were let go.Of these, 10 million came to the North.Of the 10 million, about half were black. Many of these people moved to urban areas. Another important factor of the Movement, was that blacks became a â€Å"swing vote.†Politicians recognized that with blacks gaining voting rights, they could get more votes. Thus, politicians became more aware of what affected the blacks. 4thEssay Sample on Civil Rights Movement In 1947, Branch Rickey of the New York Dodgers made history by signing Jackie Robinson to the Dodgers, thefirst African American major league baseball player. Jackie made a huge step for himself but also for all African Americans in the nation. A few years later, in 1954, the Supreme Court settled a case called Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas where they reversed Plessy vs. Ferguson stating that segregation was constitutional as long as equal facilities were provided. This action got the ball rolling for the civil rights movement because it showed the African Americans that the federal government was now on their side. In 1955, Rosa Parks boarded a bus in Montgomery, Alabama and ignited the progress of the movement. Soon a pastor, Martin Luther King, emerged as a great leader for the movement. His unique non-violent approach to achieving the goals for civil rights established King as an effective guide for the African Americans in the nation. The main goal of the civil rights movement was to provide African Americans with equal rights in society. Most of them held lower position jobs than whites, and earned less. This goal was too large to accomplish all at once, therefore smaller goals were made from this one vast aspiration. One of these objectives was the desegregation of schools. Since the Supreme Court ruled that segregation is illegal in Brown vs. Board the NAACP tried to make schools in the south integrate. The idea was not accepted well and after a year, Governor Faubus of Arkansas closed thefirst high school that mixed white and black students. African Americans also pushed for desegregation of lunch counters, busses, and public facilities such as toilets and water fountains.

Qualities of a Successful College Student Essays

Qualities of a Successful College Student Essays Qualities of a Successful College Student Essay Qualities of a Successful College Student Essay What qualities in a student cause him/her to be successful in college? ESSAY 3 It can be fun for a person that is starting college. Starting college can be fun because the person is in a new environment. The environment is different for one who is starting because the person has to take on a more mature responsibility than he or she would have had taken on while in high school. Although starting college is fun, there are 3 roles a student can take on in order to be successful while in college. After getting through the 2012 school year, I have come to the conclusion that in order for a student to be successful while in college, he or she has to do the following: take a College Career Success Skills class his or her freshman year, he or she has to feel the professor out, and the student has to also take down notes. Taking a College Career Success Skills course is the best class that a 1st time freshmen can take while in college. It is the best class because the student finishes the course, knowing that he or she is going to be successful while majoring in the career of his or her choice. The course allows the student to explore a major and write a paper about it. This is because many students enter college not knowing what he or she wants to major in. The student also learns if he or she is capable of being successful in the field through taking a personality test. This test determines if the student’s personality match the field. If the student pass the test, than he or she has found a field and has also finished, knowing that he or she is going to be successful while studying in that field. For example: If bob was a 1st time freshman and he did not know what major he would be successful in studying, taken this course would have given him the answer because he would have had found the career that he knows he is good in. So, CCSS is the best course for a student who is trying to find a major to be a pro at while in college. When the student feels the professor out, this is another way of being successful while in college. This is because in order to past a course, the student has to think the way the professor would think. The student has to work a math problem out or write a sentence out the same way his or her professor would because that is what one who goes to school would called â€Å"thinking like the professor. † When a student receives a graded paper, the student is suppose too get up and ask him or her â€Å"What did I do wrong? What did this comment mean? † This way, the student has all the information he or she needs to pass the course. If the student was told to work on subject-verb agreement, this would be the main thing that the student would look out for while writing because this was his or her weakest point. This way, the student then thinks just like the professor by writing out sentences like him or her. Good note-taking skills are another great way to be successful while in college. It is another great way because every piece of note counts. Every piece of note counts because everything that was written down over the week will be on the test. A student that takes down notes all week will mostly likely say â€Å"oh, I remember this†, when it is time to test because basically it was the test the student was writing out the whole time. If a student has written down all of chapter 6, he or she is suppose too be familiar with the test after taken down notes all week. Therefore, writing notes is another quality of a student being successful while he or she is in college. What qualities in a student cause him or her to be successful while in college? Many colleges are wondering the qualities. It takes one from experience to answer such a question. After surviving the spring 2012 semester, my following qualities were: taking a CCSS course to figure out what would I be successful at studying in, feeling out the professors so we both can cooperate like teacher-student, and writing down everything the teacher wrote on the board. Those are the qualities I would recommend to any student that is asking â€Å"what qualities in a student cause him or her to be successful in college? †

See intructions - Essay Example The person or group of persons is what Hobbes calls sovereign (Lloyd-Hughes 151). The sovereign enters into a covenant with the people to provide them with peace and defense in return for surrendering their rights. However, he or she is guided by laws and in case the sovereign fails to protect the subjects, they can remove him from power. The citizens thus accept such a sovereign in order to ensure peace and protection. In state of nature, men are competitive and need someone to safeguard their property. Q2: Hobbes: State of Nature In the state of nature according to Hobbes, the life of man is â€Å"solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short† (Lloyd-Hughes 149). Men in this state are equal in body and minds thus become enemies often. Moreover they are primitive thus have â€Å"no industry, culture, cannot account for time, have no arts and no society† (149). As s result, these men quarrel most of the time as they compete with each other. They become brutish and nasty and solitary as they live in continued fear and danger of death. Furthermore, they are not aware of what is right or wrong thus engage in war against each other all the time. They are also poor and do not have accommodation or own property. It is the sovereign who apportions them land and proscribes rules of ownership after a government is formed. Q3: Liberty According to natural laws all men have the natural right of liberty and as such, use such liberty to preserve his life. Even though the renounce this right for greater gain to the sovereign, they never lose the right to life and liberty (Lloyd-Hughes 150). However, there are boundaries to these liberties. An individual cannot use this liberty to inflict harm on himself or others as consequences follow as set out in the laws of the land. Liberty is to be used only to do what is profitable to them. Liberty is also limited to the particular commonwealth as each jurisdiction has its own laws what is acceptable by one nation may not be acceptable by another. Subjects also have a right to sue against subjects for violating their rights. Q4: Machiavelli: Skill (virtu) and Fortune (Fortuna) Nicollo Machiavelli in the Prince did differentiate between skill and fortune. He referred to fortune as the ability to become a prince through luck or opportunities. For example the Theseus succeeded to conquer Athenians because Athenians were dispersed (Lloyd-Hughes 91-92). That is sheer luck and wise kinds should not rely on it as fortunes can change any time. Many princes inherited dynasties but could not keep them due to lack of skills; for example, the king of Naples. Great princes are those who have the skills and ability to control fortunes such as ruthlessness, bravery and pride. This is due to the fact that â€Å"fortune rules half of our actions†¦.the other half is determined by skill and ability† (91). He says that God sends us floods but men can change future events by taking actions that can control the f loods in future. Q5: Is It Better for Ruler to be Loved or Feared? For Machiavelli, most people would like to be loved and feared at the same time but it is much better to be feared than loved. This is because in their nature, men are â€Å"ungrateful, fickle, false, and cowardly† (Lloyd-Hughes 97). As such, these men give promises to the ruler only to retreat when things get worse. They do everything for their own interest and betray you at any time. He also claims that men love on their own will

Investigator training should focus on the structure of an Essay

Investigator training should focus on the structure of an investigation rather than the skill of the Investigator Examine this statement - Essay Example As a result, investigator training has become a critical component in preparing the investigators for their paramount role and duty in society. However, given the scenario in modern environment, it can be noted that, the role played by investigators will continue to evolve and this particular aspect will greatly affect the level, nature, content, and context of training such investigators should have. Therefore, even as training of investigators remains critical and important, the question being asked is whether the training methodology should put more focus on the structure of an investigation or on the skills of the investigator. Subsequent discussions will try to examine and analyse the statement in a deeper understanding and conceptualization. Investigators have been found to be important professionals in the dispensation of numerous activities in new world (Chandler, 2009). This is so, given that, the modern world is characterized by myriad of issues and challenges. The social world and overall human interaction is no longer at peace, since there are increased reports of terrorism activities, accidents of diverse natures, thefts of different types and magnitudes, frauds of any kind, and all sought of evil activities in society. The occurrence of these activities impacts heavily and negatively on different social institutions, actors, structures, and systems. As a result, there has been the need to identify the various ways to deal with such problems. Part of solution to these problems has been found to lie with investigators. Investigators, in their capacity as professionals, are perceived to have knowledge, skills, and sometimes experience to help other professionals identify, describe, evaluate, and analyze different a ctivities that qualify to be investigated. The book of Luke and Acts Essay Example for Free

The book of Luke and Acts Essay The book of Luke and Acts are of the same author. It is addressed to Theophilus. On the introduction of the book of Luke, Luke wrote: Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught (Luke 1:3-4). With that verse it is clear that Luke did investigated the accounts of Jesus.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   If we try to study the Bible from Matthew to John, all of the accounts are similar. They only differ in the details of the accounts. Luke is not the direct disciple (not one of the 12 disciples) of Jesus Christ but he was able to reconcile what he wrote with the books of John, Matthew and Mark. With the same accounts found in Matthew, Mark, and John, we can conclude that he understands Jesus’ purpose here on earth.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   On the book of Acts, Luke elaborates the things that make a Christian. He mentioned even how a Christian should act. He even wrote some of the accounts of the believers after Jesus ascended to heaven. In his books he never mentioned about how he understands the death of Jesus, but on his writings we can say that he fully understand the death of Jesus; that is to redeem us from our sins.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   On the other hand, it is the faith that convicts him to tell the people that Jesus is innocent of a sin deserving to death. As we can see on the accounts of Jesus on the book of Luke, Jesus did not commit things that deserve death but rather it is because of the fear of the Pharisees that the attention of the people will be diverted to Jesus. They are afraid that their positions will not be honored by the people. It is for that reason that Luke really is convicted to tell the world not only the innocence of Jesus Christ but the truth and the love that Jesus offer on the cross to save His people.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Basically, faith is the motivation of Luke in telling such thing to people. We can even attest that when we have faith on a certain thing we can do even the impossible things just to pursue or stand on the faith that we have. Work cited: The Holy Bible (1988). The Gender Battle in Mary Shelleys Frankenstein Essay -- Frankenstein

The Gender Battle in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein The fight for domination amongst the sexes is a battle as old as civilization, where the ideas of gender hierarchies first began. These conflicts often manifest themselves unwittingly through literature, showing subtle signs of deeper tension that has ensued for centuries. The struggle between masculine and feminine becomes apparent through Frankenstein, a battle that results in the death of the potentially most powerful figure in the book. Frankenstein yields characters motivated by complicated thinking, specifically the title character, Victor Frankenstein. Victor is a brilliant 19th century Swiss scientist who succeeds in generating life with electricity, creating a creature that eventually turns on his master and begins a reign of terror wherever he roams. Understanding Victor in relation to feminist studies is possible through examining his actions regarding the monster’s request of Frankenstein to fashion him a partner. Unable to win the love of his maker, Frankenstein, or his makeshift step brother, man, the monster believes the only being capable of loving him would be a creature equally horrifying as himself. Frankenstein initially refuses to comply with the demand because of guilt he already feels for the evil his monster has done. Eventually moved to pity, Frankenstein agrees to design a female on the grounds that she and her mate will "quit the neighbourhood of man" and never be seen again (Shelley 144). Victor partially completes the project before he "[tears] the thing to pieces," reasoning that he cannot have any part of making another creature who, like her mate, could become a "curse upon mankind" (Shelley 144-145). His decision seems noble to the reader, as we... ...ect mankind, but rather a wish to keep order in the masculine world. Destroying the female monster ensures that there is no feminine force created the male counterpart cannot combat, be that Victor or the monster. The female monster is a symbol in Frankenstein of an unstoppable feminine force. Only through the demise of such a character is Victor Frankenstein assured that he has not allowed that force to commandeer the control he and mankind have over femininity. Works Cited Kiely, Robert. Project Manager Job Description Essay

Since the Project Manager position is a newly created job within LRH Products, it is necessary to assess and describe the various functions assigned to this role, as well as understanding how the concept of project management works within the company (Mullaly, 2008). The specific duties and functions for the project manager at LRH have been broken down here into three component areas: competencies, leadership, and organizational responsibilities. Competencies  The project manager must have the ability to create and execute project plans and revise them as necessary according to changing requirements as well as identifying the necessary resources and assigning staff to specific tasks. This requires day-to-day assessment of the project’s progress along with quality assurance of completed tasks. Another competency is the ability to create a realistic budget and ensure that the team is staying within these financial constraints. In order to do so, a basic understanding of profit & loss statements as well as forecasting, is required. The ability of the project to stay within budget needs to be communicated to appropriate senior managers on a regular basis, as well as timely updates on progress. Meetings with team members must be scheduled and properly facilitated. Information must be disseminated in an appropriate form/forum, with particular attention paid to problems or possible risks which may occur over the course of the project. More detailed presentations may be required, depending on the directives of senior management. Tangible results expected from each project must be appropriately conveyed in order for a project to be considered successful. Because so much of project management is automated through the use of technology, part of the project manager’s burden is to stay up-to-date on the latest software and hardware which aids in the ability to achieve the goals of the position. As well, the project manager must work closely with the IT department of the organization, which can implement necessary additions and changes to the current system. A basic understanding of LRH Products’ network, system, database, client/server architecture, and application programming is necessary for effective communication with the IT staff members. Leadership The ability to lead a team is of utmost importance when performing the duties of project manager. The team members’ development rests squarely on the shoulders of the manager as well as the duty of being able to implement changes within the group as necessary. This begins with being a positive role model and offering mentoring services to the staff. One of the more difficult aspects of leadership is identifying team members who demonstrate opportunities for improvement and handling suggestions to achieve improvement in a tactful and constructive manner. Members of the team must be motivated and encouraged to perform at their utmost capability. This is achieved through the use of acknowledgement of the contributions from each employee as well as a display of appreciation for their efforts. Conflicts will arise, and it is up to the project manager to handle these swiftly and efficiently. The manager must stay in constant communication with the team. Activities planned outside of the normal day-to-day duties of work should also be part of effectively leading and motivating a team. Organizational Responsibilities Part of managing the team’s human resources involves giving performance evaluations to team members as well as working with each to identify and execute personal goals within the organization. Training, beyond the usual provided by the company, may need to be scheduled to appropriately facilitate development. Team members should be encouraged to undertake their own developmental measures, as well. LRH Products will always experience room for improvement of its current processes and a project manager is expected to make recommendations to achieve this. Of course, the standard policies and procedures must be upheld while ensuring compliance of such by the manager’s team members. Another important aspect of the project manager’s duties is to be innovative in developing and designing new projects which will contribute to the company’s overall success. Each project implemented must be completed in a timely manner and within budget constraints to assure success; the six phases from IT project management guidelines include Planning, Analysis, Design, Construction, Test, and Rollout. The project manager must oversee each phase as well as foreseeing and reacting to any risks and changes which may occur along the way. Staying up-to-date on, and utilizing, current technology is a an important component of this aspect. These three areas of project management: competencies, leadership, and organizational responsibilities, all interact. Successful implementation of each area is vital to achieve success in this position.

Animal Cruelty in America - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 7 Words: 2196 Downloads: 8 Date added: 2019/05/21 Category Society Essay Level High school Tags: Cruelty To Animals Essay Did you like this example? An animal is abused every ten seconds throughout the world. Intentional Cruelty to animals is correlated strongly with many other crimes and also makes you a vile person. No one is born and deserves the lives that many of these animals endure. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Animal Cruelty in America" essay for you Create order People can easily help these animals if they put in the effort to because it is as easy as donating a dollar or signing a petition. Abuse towards animals has lasting effects on them emotionally and physically for the rest of their lives because many of them are raised this way. Tougher punishments must be put in place to stop this abuse throughout America as well as the world. Animal cruelty is an epidemic through the United States and we must work to end it. Many animals are affected for the whole of their lives by physical abuse. Any type of animal-fighting ring always leads to a life of hardship for that animal. Many fighting dogs may have their ears cropped and tails docked close to their body(ASPCA). Because of the disfigurement these dogs might be aggressive for the rest of their lives. This has a huge effect on the people around them and themselves. They will not be able to cope normally or have good lives. At these dogfights, dogs are shown what they are worth through the actions of others. Cops can be seen participating in the sport (ASPCA). They see their owner neglecting them, people throwing money, and all they are taught how to do is fight. It is not a fair life or something an animal deserves and when the people that are supposed to protect them do not then they have nothing. Also, getting beat up on everyday and then afterwards being attached to a two foot chain can really affect the body and longevity of an animalrs live b ecause dogs [and chickens] are conditioned for fighting through the use ofanabolic steroids(ASPCA). Any animal can be seriously injured especially if it is repeated over and over again. They could lose an eye or a leg, something that is permanent. Physical abuse towards animals can happen anywhere and by cracking down and taking first offenses seriously such as long-term jail sentences, we can counteract and help eradicate this abuse towards animals. Domestic Violence is strongly correlated with animal abuse. Where therers domestic abuse therers usually animal abuse. There is an established link between cruelty to animals and violence towards human-regularly referred to as ?The Link(ALDF) Abusers usually will do anything to hurt their victim, and they can do that through abuse of a pet. They want to hurt their victim anyway they can and that is usually by going after loved ones such as a pet. This abuse also makes it hards for a domestic violence victim to leave because what if their partner is holding the pet captive to keep you there. Throughout 88 percent of homes where there is child abuse, there is also animal abuse and neglect (PETA). Itrs staggering how common this is and that animal abuse as well as child abuse can be so frequent and go hand-in-hand. Around 20 men or women are assaulted each minute and around 70% of households have pets(ALDF). Since domestic abuse occurs injunction with animal abuse that means over ten an imals are being abused also because an abuser almost always goes for the animal too. Domestic violence is always associated with animal abuse and even death, this results in millions of domestic pets being abused each year. The statistics are startling when it comes to animal abuse because of how high the numbers are. They show how common animal abuse really is and how it is not going away Over ten million animals are abused per year. Thatrs about 19 per minute (Humane Society). Obviously these statistics need to be brought down. So far they have but to do even more, we need to be even more diligent and tougher on crime. It is absolutely crazy that we can walk past a person who does this and not even know or have them be brought to justice. People who abuse animals are usually men around 30 but it could be anyone (Human Society). If this is the group that most targets animals than something needs to be done. If someone goes to prison then they should be forced to go to meetings or therapy and talk about why they did it and how they can stop. Also if someone has a history of abuse than they should be checked up on every so often. Animal abuse in factory farms is very common and happens more than any othe r abuse (Humane Society). Most of the time it goes unchecked or unreported because people do not want to lose money. There is not a lot of stigma because many people only see green and this type of abuse is easy to hide. They do not care how an animal is treated as long as they do not see it and they are making cash. Chickens are usually the worst treated and thousands are killed everyday for food. These statistics can be significantly lower if the government and ordinary people try harder in their daily lives such as donating money, upping the sentences of animal abusers, or something as simple as eating cage free. Many animals will be mentally scarred the rest of their lives from the treatment they endured. After getting abused every day it is hard to trust anyone again. Most dogs after being treated that way do not know how to handle love or affection (ALDF). When I went to an Animal Protective League, I would walk dogs and sometimes they just wanted to be laid in a corner, keeping their head down and would not move. One dog almost bit my hand off after I tried petting him because of how scared he was. Animals can only be rehabilitated to an extent, the first step is stopping any type of abuse before it happens. Many women who hoard animals neglect them and need mental help( Humane Society). By being neglected they are starved and are made to sit in their own waste. How can a dog be emotionally alright after having to deal with that sort of treatment? They are scared and do not know how to treat people who treat them with kindness. People who abuse or neglect animals are usually mentally ill and need help. They need to go to therapy and these animals need to be taken away and adopted by someone that will care for them and love them. A lot of the time animal abuse does not come from nowhere. Many people who abuse animals were also abused t hemselves. This usually means they are emotionally stunted and do not know how to let out their emotions without harm to themselves or anything. This is why they must get therapy so they can understand why they are wrong and what they can do. Abuse is not just physical, it almost always manifests itself emotionally and is as important to recovery as physical abuse. Over the years, laws have changed for the better but there is still a long way to go. Laws towards animal abuse need to be greatly improved so society can improve. There are barely any laws protecting livestock (ALDF). If livestock are abused it is usually not reported unless it is severe and even then there is usually nothing done. Many people think ?well they are going to die anyway but many of these animals are cows for milk or hens who lay eggs and they are not given standards that are even somewhat livable. In Ohio, Godfreyrs law has helped with the welfare of animals (Borchardt). It made animal abuse a first offense felony, and they need to pay a $2,500 fine and go to jail for a couple months. This is a first and great step for Ohio because by making it a first offense felony , it shows how severe this crime really is. The Uniform Crime Report is really helpful to police when tracking down abusers but only a third of the nation uses it (PETA). By instituting it nationwide, more animal abusers can be put to justice. If this database is updated in the next couple years then so many more people can be caught and more animals will find better care. Laws have come far for animals in the last century but there is still a long way to go and more legislation for animal rights and time is what will help. So what can Americans do to help stop animal cruelty? There are a lot of things that you can do. Go out and vote for tougher legislation on animal cruelty. This is needed especially for farm animals who are rarely treated well ( PETA). Many of these corporate giants are able to get away with animal cruelty because of minimal laws to protect these cows, chickens, hens, etc. Also, they are able to stand up in their towers and turn a blind eye to what is going on. Many states still need animal cruelty to be a first offense felony, so by going to town halls and voting on issues like this, cruelty towards any animal can become a first offense. Animal fighting rings need to be weeded out and destroyed(ASPCA). They are all over the country and are still going strong despite the majority of people being against it. By donating to ASPCA or any organization against dogfighting you are also helping. Also, signing the HEART Act which helps animals who are victims of dogfights or cockfights find better homes much faster and will not be stopped by government red tape. Donation also really helps animals that have been affected by abuse get better care. These dollar donation or however much you want to spend could be the difference for their next bowl of food or water. This could also get animals beds and toys that make life more enjoyable and bearable for them. This donation adds up and can really help an animal in need. There is a lot of things citizens can do to help make life better for all animals in America because we live in a democratic society that allows us to speak up for what we believe in which can really make animals lives easier Some people argue that animals do not have the same feelings or emotions as people. So this would mean they do not get affected as emotionally or physically by abuse but this is so untrue. An animal tells you when they do not like something by whimpering or barking. Animals feel pain the same way because they are hurt if they are kicked or neglected to sit in their own waste. Animals are pretty defenseless because they cannot speak up for themselves and say what happens to them. Their body language is how people can tell that somethings not right and people always need to speak up and say something. Also, many people assert that farm or factory animals are going to die anyway so why spend more money to treat them better. These animals are not just born to die, many of them serve a purpose such as giving milk, eggs, etc. Since they are being forced to give us this against their will and probably know no other life then they should be given some higher standard of living. Spaces no bigg er than ipods should not be normal for hens to lay their eggs. Hundreds of chickens should not be crammed into a dark room to wait to die. Cage free may be more expensive but as they become more standard, prices will drop and the old way will soon go out of business if it keeps on progressing at the same rate. Stores ran more sales for cage-free eggs than regular eggs (ASPCA). Even if some people do have an argument for animal cruelty they are always going to be wrong. Animals are some of the most vulnerable beings to abuse. Millions of animals each day are being abused and the reality is America can do so much more. These animals could be family or livestock but each one deserves to be treated with dignity. Domestic Violence is usually a precursor to animal abuse and vice versa.. This leads to emotional and physical effects that can affect them the rest of their lives. Household pets are not the only ones susceptible to emotional or physical abuse. Farm and factory animals need to be treated better. Harsher laws can be put in place to punish those who do this and fines should be put in place for corporate companies where animal abuse happens and they do not do anything. Cruelty towards animals happens too often and we must work to end it. Bibliography Animal Abuse and Human Abuse: Partners in Crime. PETA, Animal Cruelty and Domestic Violence.
